FORGET Nemo, passengers on-board a Far Northern dive boat found a much more impressive marine creature while snorkelling off Port Douglas.
Poseidon passengers and crew had an incredible once-in-a-lifetime experience when a humpback whale swam up to greet them, while the vessel was moored at Agincourt Reef yesterday.
Snorkellers were kept in a tight group as the 3-4-year-old whale swam around them for about 20 minutes.
Poseidon skipper Dan Hill described the gentle giant’s level of curiosity around the snorkellers as “extreme.”
“I have not seen this before,” he said.
“He made at least 20 passes.”
Poseidon dive instructor Liam Platt said the whale seemed to be more curious than minke whales, which regularly interacted with divers and snorkellers.
“This is a once-in-a-lifetime event for someone who spends every day on the Reef,” he said.
